Fluxion: Solo Collaborations Tour

Iowa was my home for seven years, first as an undergrad student at the University of Iowa and later when I taught at Clarke College, and it was truly a joy to return on tour with a program of 20th/21st-century solo works for flute, alto flute, and bass flute. I had two variations of this program—a performance-presentation of the unaccompanied works and a full recital that also included two pieces with electronics:

Flames Must Not Encircle Sides for solo flute - Robert Dick
Snowblink for solo flute - Lisa Bost-Sandberg
December for solo alto flute - Harvey Sollberger
Life-Drawing for flute and tape - Lawrence Fritts
Der Ohrenzeuge
: character study after Elias Canetti for solo bass flute - Joseph Klein
I Will Not Be Sad in This World for alto flute and electronics - Eve Beglarian
Fluxion for solo flute - Lisa Bost-Sandberg
Rubha Hunish for solo alto flute - Brooke Joyce

My stops included Grinnell College, Drake University, Simpson College, Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, and Luther College. Of course, one of the highlights was getting to see my wonderful flute colleagues at these institutions—Claudia Anderson, Leslie Marrs, Kimberly Helton, Sonja Giles, Nicole Esposito, Angeleita Floyd, and Carol Hester—and getting to work with their students in masterclasses and Q&A sessions! Many other friends and former students came to events—thank you all!

It was also meaningful to get to see the Iowa composers that I featured on the program—Brooke Joyce, who hosted my residency at Luther, Harvey Sollberger, who I first met in Iowa City many years ago, and Larry Fritts, who I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to take some composition lessons with about a decade ago.

Other highlights included working with composition students at Luther, performing Joe Klein’s piece on his birthday, having a day off in Iowa City (Java House and Prairie Lights!), getting quality time with the Scudiero family and the Mons family, meeting Fluter Scooter’s deer, and lots of great meals and even better conversations.

Many thanks to those who hosted my visits and all who came out to hear. I was so happy to have these opportunities to share this program.
