Chroma Project

Marjorie Schlossman and I met by chance as we were both performing on a Bemidji Symphony Orchestra concert. Soon after meeting, I realized that I knew her nephew, who covers college hockey for the Grand Forks Herald, and also her uncle—Gunther Schuller!

Margie commissioned me to write eight short movements to pair with eight of her paintings. I got to spend hours with her collection—both in person and a database—to select the paintings for the project, and as it began to really take shape (several movements had been written, and the instrumentations and paintings for the others were determined), she decided to get Mary Trunk and Caren McCaleb involved. Mary and Caren are documentary filmmakers that Margie has worked with on other projects, and they came to Grand Forks and Fargo to film footage of interviews, rehearsals, and the world premiere at the Plains Art Museum in May of 2018.

The first screening of the film took place at UND in October of 2018, paired with the second concert performance of Chroma. Now the film is available in an interactive format, including full performances of each movement paired with their respective paintings.
